This workshop helps carers understand the unique dynamics, trauma patterns, and attachment needs present in sibling groups. Many siblings have acted as parents, protectors, or emotional regulators for each other long before entering care. Placements can shift those roles—sometimes relieving pressure, sometimes creating new conflict. Carers learn how to preserve sibling bonds, rebalance unhealthy roles, and support each child’s unique identity while nurturing the sibling relationship.
- Types of sibling relationships in care: protector–child, parentified sibling, trauma-bonded, competitive, estranged.
- How trauma shows up differently in each sibling—and why identical behaviour management doesn’t work.
- Supporting each sibling’s identity: allowing children to be more than their roles (e.g., “the responsible one,” “the naughty one”).
- Creating structure and boundaries that reduce rivalry and emotional reactivity.
- Supporting safe sibling contact when separated across different placements.
- Healing past dynamics: unlearning survival roles and rebuilding trust.
Practical Strategies
- Individualised vs. shared routines: when to separate siblings for emotional safety.
- “Rebalancing roles” scripts to reduce over-functioning or parentification.
- De-escalation strategies during sibling conflict.
- Collaborative play, co-regulation, and bonding activities.
- How to have conversations about separation, reunification, and contact in a sensitive, age-appropriate way.
